Dog Grooming Equipment

July 30th, 2011

When choosing your dog grooming equipment, perhaps the most useful item that you’ll need is a good brush. There are a variety of brushes that are suitable for the different coats that dog breeds have.

For example, a pin brush is good for breeds with long hair, a slicker brush for curly hair, a bristle brush for straight hair and a hound glove for short smooth haired dog breeds.

Here’s a great video on how to bathe your dog – don’t forget the shampoo!

The next most useful piece of dog grooming equipment is a comb.
There are two main functions for dog combs and that is for general use for removing stuff from a coat and a dematting comb for dogs with long haired coats.

Scissors come in two types too … for general cutting and thinning scissors for thinning a dog’s coat.

Dog grooming clippers are great for those who have the patience and sometimes courage to do their own shaving of the coat.
A cheap loud set of clippers is more likely to frighten your dog, especially when shaving around the ears, than a more expensive quieter set.

Nail clippers come in two types: the plier type and the guillotine type. The guillotine ones are better as they won’t put pressure on the dog’s nail as the plier type may. Many of these smaller items may be purchased as part of a dog grooming kit.

A brush and flea comb are perhaps the most useful items to begin with when collecting your dog grooming equipment and the cost needs to be balanced against the price of the dog grooming parlour.

Also, it is much better for a nervous pet not to have to go to the dog groomer’s and the great thing is, if you groom your own pet and gradually add to your own collection of dog grooming equipment, you will be developing your own skills and be able to groom your dog in stages, as and when they need it.
