Dog Grooming Tables

July 30th, 2011 No comments

There are several different designs of dog grooming tables available, some
can foldaway to store into a cupboard, while others are more portable allowing easier mobility for transporting the table in and out of your car.

The more you spend on a table the more versatility it has, and if you are a professional groomer, these extras, may be important to you.

Tables tend to fall into three categories, the first two are for the professional person or dog grooming parlour and the third for the mobile professional or amateur.

groomingtable

Out of the first two choices, the first is an electric dog grooming table. Without any lifting whatsoever, it enables the professional or dog groom parlour to lift up and place down with ease the dog being groomed.

The second choice again for dog grooming professionals, is an hydraulic system which also allows that each groomed dog can be moved up or down with ease, but without the expense of the electric table, so more cost effective.

The third choice of dog grooming table is the mobile one.  This allows the flexibility and freedom for those professional or amateur dog owners who wish to use the table as a dog show exhibitor or a mobile dog groomer travelling to each customer or for the individual private dog owner’s personal use to groom their own dog.

There are various accessories available for each of the different tables described such as; Holding Frames (H-Bar), Grooming Arms, Nooses and the Lazy Susan specifically designed for small dogs.

Dog grooming tables can come as table trolleys, with wheels on the bottom and great for those who want the mobile option.  You can also buy dog grooming tops which have a non slip surface and can be attached to the top of your dog crate.  Dog grooming tables come in fixed height and adjustable height and grooming arms may be purchased separately.  Another option is dogs may be placed in a sling as opposed to just being attached to one lead, this helps support the dog’s body, making the dog feel more comfortable.  It’s especially ideal for nail clipping and is best used with an H frame support.

Dog grooming tables usually have a restrainer which clamps onto the side of the grooming table.  The restrainer has a soft lead where one end is loosely placed around the dog’s neck while the other end is attached to the top of the restrainer.  This allows extra security for you to manage your dog in a comfortable manner but with some restraint.  Never leave your dog unattended on the dog grooming table, only if you have to, then use a restrainer.  A rubber mat or non slip surface like a towel is placed on top of the grooming table so the dog will not slip off.  The four legs of the grooming table have rubber feet for extra grip to the floor.

Dog Grooming Equipment

When choosing your dog grooming equipment, perhaps the most useful item that you’ll need is a good brush. There are a variety of brushes that are suitable for the different coats that dog breeds have.

For example, a pin brush is good for breeds with long hair, a slicker brush for curly hair, a bristle brush for straight hair and a hound glove for short smooth haired dog breeds.

Here’s a great video on how to bathe your dog – don’t forget the shampoo!

The next most useful piece of dog grooming equipment is a comb.
There are two main functions for dog combs and that is for general use for removing stuff from a coat and a dematting comb for dogs with long haired coats.

Scissors come in two types too … for general cutting and thinning scissors for thinning a dog’s coat.

Dog grooming clippers are great for those who have the patience and sometimes courage to do their own shaving of the coat.
A cheap loud set of clippers is more likely to frighten your dog, especially when shaving around the ears, than a more expensive quieter set.

Nail clippers come in two types: the plier type and the guillotine type. The guillotine ones are better as they won’t put pressure on the dog’s nail as the plier type may. Many of these smaller items may be purchased as part of a dog grooming kit.

A brush and flea comb are perhaps the most useful items to begin with when collecting your dog grooming equipment and the cost needs to be balanced against the price of the dog grooming parlour.

dog grooming equipmentThe sooner that you introduce your dog to their nails being clipped and their coat being shaved etc., the easier it will be to groom them because they will get used to it! More information may be found on grooming at wiki dog grooming and about grooming basics.

Also, it is much better for a nervous pet not to have to go to the dog groomer’s and the great thing is, if you groom your own pet and gradually add to your own collection of dog grooming equipment, you will be developing your own skills and be able to groom your dog in stages, as and when they need it.

Pedi Paws Nail Trimmer

November 22nd, 2009 No comments

A really useful item called Pedi Paws is a new way of trimming your pet’s nails without the need for traditional nail clippers. Using ordinary clippers can be a struggle as many dogs just don’t like thier nails trimmed and who can blame them when the thought of cutting into their quick is an experience they’ll never forget!

It is now possible to trim pets nails by filing. Pedi Paws has a gentle rotating filing wheel that is able to easily remove thin layers of nail and leave your pet’s paws smooth and not sharp. This is also very useful to stop nails – especially cats – from scratching your furniture.

It is designed with a protective cover on the shaver to prevent harm to your pets and to stop nail filings from making a mess. The method is by rotary emery bands that gently remove thin layers of nail without the pain of traditional clippers. Pedi Paws is fast, easy and saves on visits to the dog groomer – a really useful item that also makes a great gift.

Dog Dental Brushes

Why do we need to clean our dog’s teeth?
Dogs like humans need to have their teeth cleaned in order for the teeth and gums to remain free from disease and tooth decay. It can greatly reduce any smell from their mouth too. Dried food is better than moist food as it’s the moist food that sticks between the teeth and can cause bad breath and tooth decay Dried food creates an abrasive action on the teeth and this can be used separately or together with moist food which can aid digestion as well as helping the teeth though this alone cannot replace a regular routine of dog dental brushing with canine toothpaste. This preventative care along with regular checks at the vets will help your dog keep it’s teeth for many years

How to clean your dog’s teeth.
It is best to introduce a puppy to getting it’s teeth cleaned from a very early age. Never use human toothpaste on your puppy or dog there are many dog toothpastes out on the market which are specifically designed for dog dental hygiene. Canine toothpaste is made with meat flavours so your dog should generally like it.
Start by getting the dog used to your dry finger inside of it’s mouth before eventually adding a pea sized amount of dog/canine toothpaste on the end of your finger to rub along the outside of the teeth only. This includes front and sides both top and bottom layers. When your dog lets you do this comfortably, then try using a toothbrush as the teeth will be kept clean much better with the abrasive action of the brush.

What type of dog dental brush?
There are various dog dental brush products out on the market depending on the type of breed, size and personality your dog has. This will enable your dog to be compliant with getting their teeth cleaned so it will not be too stressful for them or you!

You can purchase a baby toothbrush with a handle but make sure it has soft bristles. Another choice is a soft bristle toothbrush with a handle with the bristles being longer on the outer edge and shorter on the inner part. This allows the brush to rub against both areas of the teeth. If your dog prefers the feel of your finger rather than the brush, then you can buy finger brushes. These are made of rubber and the bristles are rubber too. This type of brush slips onto the end of your index finger.

Other aids to help with preventative dog dental care.
All dogs love to chew, it massages the gums and jawbone and helps the teeth with it’s abrasive action. Puppies especially will want to chew as they are teething, so they wont destroy your shoes or furniture you can provide your puppy or dog with Gumabone or Nylabones. These are a natural pacifier as well as helping to massage the gums and cleaning the teeth. They are also available in different flavours your dog is sure to like.

Another product on the market is Hi Life dental chews, these contain fluoride and when the dog chews on them, they go soft so the fluoride can get into the teeth.

Tug ropes are also a good way to let your dog chew, because as the dog’s teeth grind into the rope it actually helps to get rid of debris in between the teeth.
